Neymar to help poor families to cope with COVID-19
Neymar backed the campaign to help underprivileged families in Brazil cope with the coronavirus outbreak.
The campaign called on Brazilians to donate money either directly or through charity organizations to the needy families regardless of the amount.
The initiative also has the support of dual world surfing champion Gabriel Medina and other Brazilian celebrities.
Medina stated: “Now more than ever we need to give a hand to others.”
The Brazilian government announced a monthly subsidiary of 600 reais ($120) for low-income workers and small entrepreneurs as many states impose lockdowns that effectively halt the informal economy.
Around 4,000 cases of infection have been reported in Brazil thus far and 114 deaths. Globally the pandemic has claimed more than 30,000 lives.
Neymar last played for PSG in their Champions League round of 16 matches against Borussia Dortmund. The match was played behind closed doors at the Parc des Princes in Paris and a few days after, the UEFA announced that all Champions League matches, including the final have been postponed.
In France, football has come to a standstill due to the COVID-19 outbreak.
Lionel Messi, Cristiano Ronaldo, and Pep Guardiola donated €1m each to help fight COVID-19
As the coronavirus continues to rapidly spread around the world, a growing number of football stars and teams have donated millions of dollars to help medical workers and hospitals fight the global pandemic.
The outbreak of COVID-19 has forced the suspension of many major professional matches all over the world. Several football players and managers have also tested positive for the disease.
Footballers Messi and Ronaldo have reportedly donated one million euros ($1.1 million) each to the cause.
Messi's donation went to Hospital Clinic in Barcelona, which is both treating the victims of the pandemic and researching the virus.
Portugal and Juventus forward Cristiano Ronaldo and his agent Jorge Mendes also jointly donated life-saving equipment to Portuguese hospitals in Lisbon and Porto.
English Premier League football teams Brighton and Bournemouth became the first clubs to sign up to a campaign to make 100,000 free football tickets available to UK medical workers on the front line during the coronavirus outbreak.
It was reported that Argentina international Messi’s donation will be split between Hospital Clinic in Barcelona and another medical center in his home country.
Former Barcelona player and manager Guardiola made his contribution to a campaign launched by the Angel Soler Daniel Foundation and Medical College of Barcelona.
The donation campaign promoted by the Medical College of Barcelona and managed through the Angel Soler Daniel Foundation aims to collect medical materials and financial contributions from collegiate doctors and the general population, for the purchase of medical equipment and equipment that is currently lacking in health centres in Catalonia.
It will also help finance the alternative production, through 3D printing and other methods of respirators and personal protection equipment for healthcare staff.
Before Guardiola made his donation, the campaign had raised €33,000 in three days.
Spain is the country worst affected by the disease in Europe outside of Italy, with 2,696 deaths and almost 40,000 positive cases.
The region of Catalonia, where Guardiola is from and where Messi has lived since joining Barca aged 13, is one of the worst-affected parts of the country.
